Which Authority You’re Dealing With

Documentary shoots in Israel rarely need just one permit — the requirement depends on where you’re filming. Municipal filming permits cover most city streets and public spaces; the Israel Nature and Parks Authority controls nature reserves and national parks; the Israel Antiquities Authority is involved at archaeological sites; and Jerusalem’s Old City often needs coordination with the relevant religious authority — the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, the Greek Orthodox or Latin Patriarchates, or the Islamic Waqf — depending on the specific site. Our location managers know which office to approach for each location, rather than leaving a visiting production to work that out on the ground.

Productions filming in the Palestinian Authority areas need a separate layer of coordination, arranged through our Bethlehem production team, and any documentary that touches on security-sensitive subject matter — military areas, border regions or current events — is routed through the appropriate security clearance well before the shoot date.

Permit lead times vary by site and subject — a standard municipal permit can often be turned around in days, while archaeological, religious or security-sensitive locations need longer, and we advise on realistic timelines during pre-production rather than after a shoot date is already booked. We also arrange the local production insurance most authorities require before issuing a permit, and where a location needs on-site security or a permit officer present during filming, we book that as part of the same process.
